Join Us for Hailee's Birthday at Frosts - Wednesday, August 1 after Practice

Hello 99GG families!

Hailee's birthday is on Wednesday and we would like to invite the girls to Frost and buy them a treat after practice on Wednesday.  They have fabulous gelato and sorbet.  In addition to celebrating Hailee we have set this up to be a TEAM fundraiser.  So. . . .  bring your families and enjoy a treat!  This is a 2 day fundraiser Wednesday and Thursday (All day both days).  Frost will be donating 20% of purchases to the99GG team.  I have attached a flyer with the details that you can print and cut 6 to a page.  Pass them out, post on facebook, email etc to your peeps!  Would love to generate enough funds to help pay for tourney fees and such!  Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks everyone!

Go Thunder!!

7/25/12 - Coach Update & Reminders

Hi everyone, message below from Coach Lindsey.

Also, please call the Ayers hotel and provide them with your Credit Card to secure your room reservation for West Coast Tourn! Extra rooms not secured will be dropped very soon!

-------

Hello 99 Families!

The time has come to start our season! I hope the girls are excited as I am for us to get started and start becoming a team. We are a team on a mission to accomplish great things this year, things that no other Thunder team has yet to accomplish which is a state championship. In order to achieve this goal, we have some other obstacles ahead of us one including the West Coast Tournament! We have a great bracket for West Coast where we will certainly be tested. I'm confident the girls will rise to the occassion and be up for the challenge.

We have one more summer skills session on thursday and then we will kick off our season next week. We will train tuesday, wednesday, thursday and friday next week from 6:30-7:30. Next week is mandatory practice, NOT OPTIONAL. We have alot of work to do leading up to the tournament and next weeks trainings will begin to help me decide our starting line-up and formation. Please let me know if you cannot make a session next week either to me or randi so I can keep track. Also, next week I will give the girls positional expectations so they will know what their job is as an outside back or center back etc on both defense and offense! If they or you have any questions, you are more than welcome to ask me!

We also might have a friendly with SC Del Sol coming up on August 11. They have contacted me asking if we were interested so depending on field availability etc we might have a scrimmage then. If we do not scrimmage them, we will definitely get a scrimmage in with the 98 gold so we can beat up on them a little bit before West Coast!

Please utilize our team website and 99 gg calender! This is help tremendously as we begin having more training and if things change, everything will be up there!

One last thing, I would like to get a head count/ parent's opinions on attending Mayors Cup in October instead of Sereno Pro Classic. The 98 GG and GB are going to this tournament and I know we attended last year. Please let me know if you would like to attend Mayors Cup so I can start a count!!

Thank you for all that you do for your daughter and I am excited to push them to the next level this year! Lets go!

-LJ

Referee Re-certification Information

All classes are held in downtown Phoenix.

Go to azref.com to sign-up.  The best class is August 18; you can attend a morning or afternoon session.  You will then know the new law changes (there might be some surprises for you!) and will not have to take off a Saturday during the season to take this class.

The classes fill up fast.  Talk to your friends and figure out a carpool to make things easier for your parents!

You sign-up and pay online.  PRINT PAYMENT SHEET.  You will then get an email telling you how to take the referee test.  Find your law book from last year.  Go to ussoccer.com and locate "Advice to Referees."  This will help you immensely during the test.  Try to answer each question; if you are not sure, then refer to your resources.

You must pass the test before attending class.  You get three tries.  You need to print out your payment slip and bring that to class as well.

THIS IS FOR RECERTIFICATION ONLY.  You must have attended a 17 hour Entry Level class before you can do this.  If you have been uncertified for one year, you can still recertify for 2013 with only the test and 4 hour class.  If you stay out another year, you will have to take the full class again.

If you have questions, let me know.

Again, I strongly recommend going to one of the August 18 sessions.  You will be placed in a class with your peers in age and experience.

Hope Solo Biography to be released August 14, 2012

Solo: A Memoir of Hope [Hardcover]

Amazon link:

Order:  http://www.amazon.com/Solo-A-Memoir-Hope/dp/0062136747/ref=pd_sim_sbs_b_2

Book Description

August 14, 2012
"My family doesn't do happy endings. We do sad endings or frustrating endings or no endings at all. We are hardwired to expect the next interruption or disappearance or broken promise."
Hope Solo is the post-feminist face of the modern athlete. She is fearless, outspoken, and the best in the world at what she does: protecting the goal of the U.S. women's soccer team. Her outsized talent has led her to the pinnacle of her sport—the Olympics and the World Cup—and made her into an international celebrity who is just as likely to appear on ABC's Dancing with the Stars as she is on the covers of Sports IllustratedESPN The Magazine, and Vogue. But her journey—which began in Richland, Washington, where she was raised by her strong-willed mother on the scorched earth of defunct nuclear testing sites—is similarly haunted by the fallout of her family history. Her father, a philanderer and con man, was convicted of embezzlement when Solo was an infant. She lost touch with him as he drifted out of prison and into homelessness. By the time they reunited, years later, in the parking lot of a grocery store, she was an All-American goalkeeper at the University of Washington and already a budding prospect for the U.S. national team. He was living in the woods.
Despite harboring serious doubts even about the provenance of her father's last name (and her own), Solo embraces him as fiercely as she pursues her dreams of being a world-class soccer player. When those dreams are threatened by her standing within the national team, as when she was famously benched in the semifinals of the 2007 World Cup after four shutouts and spoke her piece publicly, we see a woman of uncompromising independence and hard-won perseverance navigate the petty backlash against her.
For the first time, she tells her version of that controversial episode, and offers with it a full understanding of her hard-scrabble life.
Moving, sometimes shocking, Solo is a portrait of an athlete finding redemption and belonging in an unconventional family. This is the side of Hope that few have ever glimpsed.

The Essence of Mia Hamm

Article from espnW:  http://espn.go.com/espnw/title-ix/8078671/the-essence-mia-hamm?ex_cid=2012_espw_ob

The essence of Mia

Jun 22 11:10 AM ET | By Julie FoudyespnW
Mia Hamm & Julie Foudy Harry How/Getty ImagesBest female athlete of the past 40 years? Mia Hamm. And she was even better as a teammate, says Julie Foudy, left.
I would bet a fine dinner (without kids) and my left leg (just a kickstand anyway) that, upon learning she has been chosen as the No. 1 female athlete of the past 40 years, Mia Hamm will shake her head, smile sheepishly and say, with a hint of incredulity, "Really?! That cannot be true with all the great female athletes of this era."
And that is the essence of Mia. It is why she transcended sports. It is why she is so beloved. It is why I constantly thank her for providing the foundation for our national team and guiding our growth, and for giving girls around the globe hope that they, too, can wear a sports jersey, tear apart defenses and dominate with grace and a smile.
Everyone knows what Mia did as an athlete. You know about her successes and awards as the best female soccer player in the world. But it's her refreshingly sincere selflessness -- in everything she does -- that helped make her an icon.
The irony of it all, of course, is that Mia never wanted the attention. She just wanted to play. And she wanted to win. I mean, she REALLY wanted to win. When she was thrust into the spotlight in the late 1990s, she could have easily declined interviews, refused photo shoots, shied away from the media. Instead, and intuitively, without anyone ever telling her what had to be done, Mia understood that women's soccer needed attention.
[+] EnlargeMia HammReutersHamm could dazzle with her brilliance on the field and impress with her graciousness off it.
She understood that girls needed to see other girls playing sports. She understood that the popularity of soccer rested almost squarely upon her shoulders. Most of all, and perhaps most important to our team's success, she understood that it was about the group, not about her.
This unselfishness, her willingness to deflect and graciously thank others, is what I will always cherish the most when I think of Mia's many qualities. Because her way of doing things showed her teammates, along with millions of girls and boys and grown-ups, that success is about working your tail off, motivating others to join you and celebrating others when the focus could be on you.
One of my favorite examples of Mia's insatiable quest for the greater good was before the 1999 Women's World Cup. When asked to do a magazine cover shoot, Mia said, "I would love to -- if I can do it with these four players, as well." And that's how five teammates ended up on the cover. (This kind of thing happened often.)
Whenever she accepted an award, Mia would spend the first 10 minutes thanking her teammates, family, coaches, friends, doctors, trainers, past teachers, etc., for helping her achieve success. She did it honestly and never for show. Mia's unwavering commitment to the group defined who we were as a team. She set the standard for all of us to follow.
Be strong, be tough, be competitive, be a family. Respect the game. Respect each other.
I know that I speak for all of my former teammates when I say that luck found us when we were given the opportunity to play alongside Mia and to watch her dominance from the front row. But I think I am most blessed to be able to call her a friend. (As we mention to her often, she is stuck with us for life.)
Mia, thanks for what you have done and continue to do to show the world why sports is so much more than just wins and losses. Thanks for showing young kids that they don't have to compromise who they are to find success. Thanks for being a constant reminder of the brilliant balance between competing and collaborating. Thanks for inspiring generations to come.
And thanks mostly, well ... for just being you.
