Thunder Families,
We wanted to take an opportunity to clarify our policy for cancelling practice when temperatures reach a certain level and also address yesterday's cancellation.
Simply put - if the temperature exceeds 110 degrees AT THE TIME OF PRACTICE then we will cancel. We use weather.com as a resource and around noon look at the hourly forecast. If the forecast is calling for temperatures to exceed 110 degrees after 5:00 and still after 6:00, then we will cancel training accordingly (either first session only or both).
Yesterday when we looked at the forecast at around noon, it was calling for the temperature to drop down below 110 degrees after 6:00. We proceeded with putting the wheels in motion to cancel training for the first session only at that time. Unfortunately, as the day progressed, so did the heat and it it turned out that the temperature was still going to be above 110 degrees after 6:00. We ended up making the decision to cancel the later session a little after 4:00 and the word got out shortly thereafter.
Please be advised that as parents of your children, you always, always have the right to keep your kids out of training if you feel it is unsafe for them to participate in training. Parenting styles, as we all know, is a personal thing and so are opinions on when it is safe or unsafe to hold training. We have parents on both sides of the spectrum - ones that think it is crazy to hold practice when it is this hot and others who feel that if we cancel practice then we are not living up to our obligation and also that it is a good way for the kids to get in shape.
Frankly, we try to not let the differing opinions of parents influence our decision - we do what we feel is in the best interest for our club as a whole with player safety at the top of our priority list. When we have excessive heat and you feel that our decision to hold training is not in the best interest of your child then please feel free to keep them out of training. When we have training and it is still very hot outside, our coaches are given strict instructions to give frequent water breaks and to take it light on conditioning. Again, there is nothing that is more important to us than player safety.

With all that said, since weather.com has the temperature at 5:00 at 110 degrees and 109 degrees at 6:00 - BOTH TRAINING SESSIONS ARE ON FOR TODAY. We will continue to monitor the weather and communicate if there any changes.
If you have further questions or concerns on this then please feel free to address them with me or another board member. You can usually find at least one of us at training - assuming it's not too hot.
